University of the Ryūkyūs (琉球大学, Ryūkyū Daigaku) was, until 2004, a state-run university located in the town of Nishihara on Okinawa Honto in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. According to the Japanese government's recent chages to the national university system, however, this university has been reclassified as a 'national university corporation,' as have most such institutions throughout the country. It is among the most prestigious universities in the Okinawa-Kyūshū area, boasting a large medical school and many distinguished faculty members. There are also campuses in Nakagusuku and Ginowan. It was previously situated in Naha, but with the revival of Shuri Castle in the same location, it was moved to its current location. It was founded in 1950.
