The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), situated at the foot of Mount Makiling in Los Baños, Laguna, was the first autonomous campus of the University of the Philippines System. It was founded by renowned American botanist and agriculturist Edwin Copeland on March 6, 1909 as the College of Agriculture, one of the first two units of the University of the Philippines[1].

UPLB has one of the largest campuses in the Philippines, with a total land area of 36 km². Several buildings at UPLB were designed by National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin[2].

UPLB has made significant contributions to science and technology research in the Philippines and abroad, and it continues to do so despite limited funding support from the government. As testament to this, at least 22 of the 56 members of the prestigious National Academy of Science and Technology have studied and/or taught at UPLB[3].

[edit] Centers for Excellence

The Philippines' Commission on Higher Education designated UPLB as a Center for Excellence in Biology, Computer Science, Chemistry, Math, Communication, Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Forestry Education and Veterinary Education. The University is also a center for development in Physics, Information Technology and Statistics (awarded October 2006). The Commission likewise designated UPLB as the Zonal Research Center for Regions IV and V[4].

Six research institutes of UPLB were recognized as Centers for Excellence by virtue of Presidential Decree for their significant contributions to national development. These are the Institute of Plant Breeding, Institute of Food Science and Technology, National Crop Protection Center, National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH-UPLB/UP-BIOTECH), Institute of Animal Science, and the Farming Systems and Soil Resources Institute[5]. The University has a total of 33 research and training centers/institutes renowned in the region for their science and technology studies[6].

UPLB is one of only three schools in Asia that received institutional recognition in the Ramon Magsaysay Awards[7], regarded as Asia's Nobel Prize. The UPLB College of Agriculture received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding in 1977 for its pivotal role in the continent's development thru agricultural research and education. The College is also home to the country's only Thomson Scientific/Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)-accredited journal[8], The Philippine Agriculturist.

The University likewise has research partnerships and student/faculty exchange programs with the Asian Development Bank[9], Cornell University[10], Yale University[11], Purdue University[12]and Michigan State University[13], among others.

UPLB is the center of biotechnology education and research in South East Asia. It is home to at least four international research and extension centers - the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the APEC Center for Technology Exchange and Training for Small and Medium Enterprises (ACTETSME), the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEAMEO-SEARCA), and the recently inaugurated Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Center for Biodiversity.

[edit] Philippine Research Institutions

Local institutions such as bureaus of the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Agriculture are headquartered at UPLB. The Philippine Rice Research Institute and the Philippine Carabao Center also have offices at the University.
