[edit] History

UIW was founded by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, who came to San Antonio in 1869 to assist with treating a cholera outbreak. The order follows the Augustinian rule.

The institution began as the Incarnate Word School in 1881 and was originally chartered as a college for women. It became fully coeducational in 1971.

The university first became accredited in 1925 and its accreditation was reaffirmed in 2005 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.[2]

[edit] New York Times Controversy

On June 29, 2006 the Dean of Library Services cancelled the school's subscription to the New York Times to protest "their irresponsible action (treason?)" in publishing that the Bush administration used the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication in Belgium to survey thousands of bank accounts in several countries in terrorism investigations.[4] He reversed his decision the next day after several library staffers disagreed with his cancellation, but left open the possibility of a future cancellation after "engaging the university community in a discussion about the topic and reaching consensus."
