The University of the East Library was established in April 1947. The primary mission of the University Library is to support the teaching, research, learning, extension service, and cultural endeavors of the University community. The general objective is to provide adequate, timely, and relevant information resources and innovative services that support the full spectrum of teaching, learning and research needs of the University.

[edit] HISTORY

  • 1947 : The UE Library was organized in April 1947. It was located at the then Philippine College of Commerce and Business Administration (PCCBA) Building on R. Papa Street. The first books acquired were mostly on accounting, business and economics, which were purchased largely from American bookstores.
  • 1948 : The Library was transferred to the newly constructed Dalupan Hall, now Santiago F. de la Cruz Building at C.M. Recto Avenue.
  • 1950 : The Main Library was moved to the Dental Library Building, the present College of Computer Studies and Systems (CCSS) Bldg. where it occupied the entire third floor and the extension which was built in 1961. As new programs were introduced, branch libraries were also established.
  • 1971 : The Main Library was relocated to the Library-Engineering Building (formerly Library-Museum Bldg.), occupying the second and third floors.
  • 1986 : The Audiovisual Department came under the direction of the Department of Libraries.
  • 1989 : Dental Library transferred from Santa Mesa/UERM campus to the third floor of the Dentistry Building in Recto campus.
  • 1994 : University Archives was established.
  • 1996 : The Main Library was converted into a modern and first class facility located on the 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th floors of the P.O. Domingo Center for Information Technology (POD CIT) Building (formerly Library-Engineering Bldg.).
  • 2003 : The Main Library in Caloocan Campus renamed the Benjamin G. Chua Jr. Library moved into the new Tan Yan Kee Building, occupying the entire sixth floor.

The Main Library is the hub of the entire system of libraries in the University of the East. It is the largest among the libraries in the system. It has sections for Circulation, Reserve, CCSS Library, Acquisitions, Cataloging, Reference, Filipiniana, and Periodicals, which are housed on the second, third and fourth floors of the POD-CIT Building, University of the East Main Campus.

The book and serial collections continue to grow and are also being enriched with a growing collection of materials in various media and formats such as CD-ROMs, online databases and access to the Internet. Bibliographic access to the library collections is through the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) terminals available in all the libraries

[edit] Circulation Section

The Circulation Section houses the main library stacks. It includes the general reading room, the Reserve Section, the Computer Science Library, and the Office of the Assistant Director for Libraries. Seating capacity on this floor is 337.

The Reserve Section makes available to students copies of approved textbooks and other books reserved by the faculty as basic readings for specific courses.

The Computer Science Library allows students access to the growing collection of computer science materials, at the same time allowing them to charge out materials for home use.

[edit] Reference Section

Reference services use print materials, multimedia and the Internet. Hence, in addition to an extensive research/reading room, there is also a multimedia room equipped with high-speed computers with Internet and multimedia capabilities. The collection of encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, manuals, atlases, and other reference materials are either in printed or electronic format.

A wide selection of audio and video materials in all subjects is available for reference and information in the Multimedia room. Newspaper clippings, pamphlets, local and foreign school bulletins are also available. There is a special classroom designed for library science classes and a conference room for meetings or group discussions.

Another special feature is a browsing area where clients can relax on comfortable seats with any of a large collection of well-selected and attractive books. Seating capacity is 234.

[edit] Periodicals Section

The fourth floor is shared by the Periodicals and the Filipiniana Sections. There are 12 OPAC terminals on this floor. Clients have both bibliographic and full text access to hundreds of foreign serials through CD-ROMS and online databases of electronic journals, which are available in a multimedia room. Articles can be printed upon request. Back issues of selected journals and newspapers are also available in microfiche or microfilm, with readers and printers provided for access.

The Filipiniana Section collects and services materials about the Philippines, its people, history, art and culture whether published locally or abroad and works written by Filipinos. A special feature is an inner court garden. This floor can seat 160 persons.

The Archives is located on the 3 rd floor of the CCSS Bldg. It is a repository of documents, publications, photographs and other historical materials preserving the institutional memory of the University. All materials are strictly for room use only.

[edit] Graduate School Library

Located on seventh floor, POD-CIT Bldg., the Graduate School library contains over 16,000 books and houses 2,903 theses that have resulted from original research conducted by the graduate students.

The Law Library is a major resource for legal information. It holds over 18,000 volumes of books. It is located on the 3 rd floor of the Administration Bldg.

Located on the 3 rd floor of the College of Dentistry Bldg., the Dental Library houses over 8,000 volumes of books and subscribes to 50 peer-reviewed print and e-journals. The collection stresses dentistry and oral health with some titles on the biological sciences

The CPA Library serves the needs of the CPA reviewees as well as students of the College of Business Administration. It is located on the 4 th floor of the Santiago F. de la Cruz Bldg.

The Engineering Library collection is comprised of books and reference materials on civil, computer, electical, electronics & communications, industrial and mechanical engineering.

Located on the 2 nd floor of the Education Bldg., the library contains over 6,000 volumes of books for the elementary school and 9,000 for the secondary school.

[edit] Benjamin C. Chua Jr. Library

Located in Caloocan campus on the 6 th floor of the newly erected Tan Yan Kee Bldg. There are six sections in this main library, namely the Circulation and Reserve, Periodicals, Filipiniana, Fine Arts, Reference, and Multimedia. The BGC Jr. Library houses approximately 30,000 volumes of books, 122 print serial titles, and access to over 7000 full-text journal titles. Seating capacity is 213.

The Engineering Library provides reference service and collections, which provide support to research and instruction of the civil, computer, mechanical, electronics and communications, and electrical engineering programs. The collection consists of over 12,000 volumes of books. It is located on the 3 rd floor of the Engineering Bldg. Seating capacity is 216.

[edit] Medical Library

The Library Occupies the entire third floor of the Dr. Jose Cuyegkeng Building. It is rectangular in shape and has an area of 10,000 square feet. It is adequately furnished, fully air-conditioned and has a reading room with accommodations of 240 readers.

The library also occupies the northwest wing of the second floor of the same building that houses the Audiovisual Library and the stack room for periodicals dated prior to 1971. The Audiovisual library is well-equipped and fully air-conditioned.

The library maintains a carefully selected collection of books, periodicals, audiovisual materials and other printed materials in medicine, nursing, physical therapy and allied fields.
