The University of Wisconsin System is the public state university system in the state of Wisconsin, composed of fifteen institutions with twenty-six campuses. It is one of the largest public higher education systems in the country, enrolling more than 160,000 students each year and employing more than 32,000 faculty and staff statewide.
The University of Wisconsin System was founded in 1971 with the merger of the then University of Wisconsin, which included the Madison (1849), Milwaukee (1956), Green Bay (1968) and Parkside (1968) campuses, with the nine Wisconsin State Universities and the Centers and the Extension.

There are two research universities in the University of Wisconsin System that grant doctoral degrees: University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

University of Wisconsin-Madison is the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. Founded in 1848, is the largest university in the state with a total enrollment of over 41,000 students, of whom approximately 29,000 are undergraduates. This makes the university the tenth largest in the United States in terms of student population.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is the second research institution of the University of Wisconsin System and the second largest university in the state of Wisconsin. It also has the largest Wisconsin student enrollment in the U.S. [1] The University is located in Wisconsin's largest city - Milwaukee, and is home to academic centers, institutes and laboratory facilities in such areas as architecture and urban planning, business, gravitation and cosmology, Great Lakes studies, fine arts, surface studies, education, nursing and twenty-first century studies.

UW Colleges is an institution of the University of Wisconsin System that grants associate degrees on thirteen local campuses. The UW Colleges also grants associate degrees through its online program. The UW-Extension operates extension courses statewide through offices in each of Wisconsin's 72 counties.
