University of St Andrews Liberty Club
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded in 2001, by Alex Singleton, Dr. Marian Tupy and Conyers Davis, the University of St Andrews Liberty Club has inherited the mantle of the University of St Andrews Political Economy Club, which was founded by Dr. Madsen Pirie and Dr. Eamonn Butler who later founded the highly influential Adam Smith Institute. The Club exists to promote classical liberalism and all that is associated with it; it is therefore of a libertarian leaning.
The Club has over 100 members and is the largest libertarian organisation in Scotland. It regularly holds lectures with distinguished guest speakers - past speakers include Lord Pearson of Rannoch, Bill Emmott, former editor of The Economist, Professor Dennis O'Keeffe, editor of The Salisbury Review, Andrew Neil, former editor of the Sunday Times, and Professor Sir Alan Walters, former political advisor to Margaret Thatcher. Professor Dr Norbert Walter, Chief Economist of Deutsche Bank Research, has delivered a speech on European Integration as part of the club's annual guest lecture series.
It has strong association with right wing and libertarian think tanks. Former Club President Alex Singleton left his first job at the Adam Smith Institute to found the Globalization Institute, and former Vice President Dr. Marian Tupy works for the Cato Institute.
