The University of Southern Denmark was formed in 1998 by the merger between Odense University, Southern Denmark School of Business and Engineering and South Jutland University Centre. The University is located in southwest Denmark and has campuses in Odense on the island of Funen, as well as in the cities of Kolding, Esbjerg and Sønderborg on the Jutland peninsula.

As a national institution the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) comprises five faculties – Humanities, Science, Engineering, Social Sciences and Health Sciences totaling 32 departments, 11 research centers and a university library.

Research and teaching of students make up the core activities of the University. University of Southern Denmark also has widespread cooperation with the trade and industry of the region and considerable activities within continuing education.
