The University of Luxembourg is the only university in Luxembourg, founded on 13 August 2003 amid much fanfare. Prior to that, Luxembourger students had to go abroad in order to study at a university (usually to Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, and Great Britain). The new university should make it possible for these students to complete their studies in their own country, as well as attract foreign academic interest to Luxembourg.
Like Luxembourg itself, the studies at the University of Luxembourg are characterised by their multilingualism. Courses are held in French or English; Luxembourgish and German are the two common languages on the campus.
Several debates about the founding and the curriculum of the university took place in the Luxembourger media, about primarily the idea of interdisciplinarity, the worth of the Humanities, and the organization of the university itself. The primary medium of this debate was the Luxembourger cultural journal forum. Two people critical of the course the politics surrounding the founding of the university were Luxembourger historian Michel Pauly and the Austrian philosopher Volker Zotz (who taught in Luxembourg), who emphasized the meaning of the humanities.
