The University of Kragujevac (Serbian: Универзитет у Крагујевцу / Univerzitet u Kragujevcu) is a university located in Kragujevac, Serbia. It was founded in 1976 and is organized in 11 Faculties.
[edit] History
The University of Kragujevac was founded on May 21, 1976. This is actually the date when Prince Miloš Obrenović, back in 1838, set up the Licej, the first institution of high education in Serbia. When Belgrade became the capital, most of the ministries moved there along with the Licej. In 1863 it was renamed into "The Great School" and in 1905 it eventually became the University of Belgrade.
The University of Kragujevac was established as a result of a formal recognition of the community need to provide scholarly environment for prospective academics and to encourage and support research activities. At the beginning of its work the University of Kragujevac incorporated five faculties: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Kraljevo and two research institutes: Small Grains Research Institute in Kragujevac and Fruit Research Institute in Čačak. All the faculties joined into the University of Kragujevac started their work as branches of respective faculties of the University of Belgrade, some as early as 1960.
Today the University of Kragujevac has grown into a modern educational and research center embracing almost all major areas of teaching and research, presently comprising 11 faculties with the student population of 14,000 and the academic staff of 1,000. These faculties are spread in five towns of the Central Serbia region which covers an area populated by 2,500,000 people. The University of Kragujevac offers a wide range of study programs on undergraduate and advanced levels. So far 18,000 students graduated from the University, 600 earned their master’s degree and 300 successfully defended their doctoral dissertations.
