University of Kent Students' Union

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The University of Kent Students' Union, also known as Kent Union, is the student representative body for students at the University of Kent, England.

Based around a combination of Junior College Committees and a central set of elected officers the SU has an influence at all levels of the University.

At one time (ca. 1974) nationally notorious for its extreme left-wing politics, the Union has changed significantly in recent years. Its campaigning has led to the construction of a Union Buildings complex (previously conspicuous by its absence), sundry campus safety measures and the promotion of student opinions of academic quality.

In 1998 a substantial construction programme was completed that included a successful multi-purpose shop, the popular "The Venue" nightclub and "The Lighthouse" bistro. Prior to that the Union had a shop 500 yards from its office building (Mandela Building), and all entertainments were either held in Junior Common Rooms (JCRs) or in Dining Halls.
