The University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) is a small, liberal arts university and the third campus of the University of Illinois system. UIS was established in 1969 as Sangamon State University by the Illinois General Assembly and became a part of the University of Illinois on July 1, 1995.
The 746 acre (3.0 km²) campus is located on the suburban southeast side of Springfield, Illinois near Lake Springfield.
Known for its focus on teaching, faculty and a record in business education, UIS serves 5,500 students in 18 master's degree, 20 undergraduate programs, and a doctorate in Public Administration. The academic curriculum of the campus emphasizes a strong liberal arts core, and array of professional programs, extensive opportunities in experiential education, and a broad engagement in public affairs issues in its academic and community service pursuits.
UIS (along with Governors State University) was once one of the two upper-division and graduate universities in Illinois. Since 2001 UIS has switched to a full four-year undergraduate program, adding 100 freshmen and 100 sophomores to the university under the name of Capital Scholars. In 2006, 250 more freshmen were added, making the Capital Scholars a general education-type program and the original Capital Scholars into a honors program under the name of Capital Honors Scholars. Honors students are currently required to live on-campus in the Lincoln Residence Hall. Future residence halls and facilities are in the works for this expanding university, including a 4,000 seat arena, a new recreation center, and more suite-style and townhouse-style residences. Renovations of existing buildings, especially those constructed in the 1970s, are in the works. These buildings lie mostly on the east quad of the UIS campus.
The campus offers many small classes, substantial student-faculty interaction, and an evolving technology-enhanced learning environment. UIS is also marketing online education.

While UIS lies mainly in a perceived conservative city and state, the campus itself is a place of free thought and open mindedness. Since its founding this campus has been considered liberal compared to the city it is in.

The campaign image for the UIS Office of Housing & Residential Life is "Living. Learning. Leading." Most students living on campus are actively involved with campus life and community events, and help make UIS more diverse. In Lincoln Residence Hall, there are two lifestyle wings: Twosouth - Healthy Lifestyles Wing; and Two West - Community Service and Volunteerism Wing. Two other wings in the Residence hall have websites as well: One South and 3 West.
