The University of Hamburg was founded on the 1 April 1919 by Wilhelm Stern and others. The University grew out of the previous "Allgemeinen Vorlesungswesen" and the "Kolonialinstitut" (Colonial Institute) as well as the "Akademischen Gymnasium". Today there are around 41,000 students (as of the start of 2004).
