[edit] History
The origin of FACS began with the 1918 creation of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Home Economics by the Georgia State College of Agriculture (a UGA college). This degree-track enabled women to enroll at the University as regular students for the first time. The Master of Science in Home Economics was authorized in 1924.
Mary Creswell was appointed in 1918 as the Director of the Division of Home Economics by the President of the State College of Agriculture, Andrew M. Soule. The initial classes consisted of two subjects: Foods and Cookery taught by associate professor Erna Proctor, and Clothing and Textiles taught by associate professor Rosalie Rathbone.
The school moved into Dawson Hall in 1932. Dawson Hall was built with a willed donation of approximately $120,000 from the estate of Dr. William Terrell Dawson of Daytona Beach, Florida to the College of Agriculture.
In 1933, the Domestic Arts Department of the Georgia State Teachers College was merged with the Division of Home Economics to form the department of Home Economics. At this time the Division of Home Economics became independent of the College of Agriculture. The Georgia State Teachers College, formerly a normal school, had been a separate college located in Athens.
