NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, commonly referred to as UET Peshawar is a public, coeducational university located in Peshawar, Pakistan. The university's degrees are highly regarded and its Electrical Engineering department and Mechanical Engineering department are well known in Pakistan. Its main campus in Peshawar is off the University Road in the University Campus area.

In 1952, an Engineering College was setup as a "constituent" college of the University of Peshawar. This college was granted the charter to operate as an independent engineering university in 1980 under the name NWFP University of Engineering and Technology. It is also popularly known as UET Peshawar.

The main campus is in the University Campus area, off University Road, Peshawar.

UET Peshawar has four campuses. The main campus is in the University Campus area, off University Road, Peshawar. Recently, three satellite campuses in Abbottabad, Bannu and Mardan have been established. The Peshawar campus, however, remains the nucleus of the University.

The Abbottabad campus was inaugurated in October 2002 at the premises of the old Ayub Medical College.

The Bannu campus became operational in May 2002 at the premises of Comrehensive High School.

The Mardan campus, also inaugurated in 2002, is spread over 22 acres of area and offers degrees in Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Software Engineering.

In 2004, UET Peshawar moved from an annual system of examination to the semester system.

In 2006, UET Peshawar introduced the Tenure Track System which is a performance-based pay system.

UET Peshawar has joint research, faculty & student training and exchange programs with various foreign universities including Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, Strathclyde University, UK, McGill University, Canada,The George Washington University, Washington DC. UET Peshawar is currently working on the following development projects with funding from HEC.

[edit] Vision Plan 2020

UET Peshawar recently submitted an ambitious plan to Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan called the Vision Plan 2020. This plan envisages:

  • An increase in the student enrollment from (approximately) 3000 to 17000.
  • A corresponding increase in faculty size from (approximately) 250 to 1150. This will maintain a student to teacher ratio of 1:15.
  • High tech labs would be increased as well as new academic programs to be established.
  • The plan also calls for upgradation of Earthquake Engineering Center to Institute of Earthquake Engineering & Engineering Seismology.
  • Modern scientific and academic areas such as Biotechnology, Alternate Energy and Environmental Engineering are planned to be added.
  • Enhanced spending on faculty development and establishing linkages with foreign universities.
  • Total cost in year 2020 is estimated to be Rs 20.29 billion.
