University of Detroit Mercy is the largest and most comprehensive Catholic University in Michigan. Its origin dates back to 1877 with the founding of University of Detroit by the Society of Jesus and to 1941 with the founding of Mercy College of Detroit by the Sisters of Mercy. In 1990, University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit merged to become University of Detroit Mercy. The University offers approximately 100 academic degrees and programs of study, including liberal arts, business, dentistry, law, engineering, architecture, nursing and health professions. UDM is ranked in the top tier of Midwestern master's universities in U.S.News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges" 2007 edition. Athletically, the University sponsors 16 NCAA Division I level varsity sports for men and women, and is a member of the Horizon League.

[edit] Mission, vision and philosophy

Mission Statement:The University of Detroit Mercy, a Catholic university in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions, exists to provide excellent student-centered undergraduate and graduate education in an urban context. A UDM education seeks to integrate the intellectual, spiritual, ethical and social development of our students.

Vision Statement: The University of Detroit Mercy will be recognized as a premier private university in the Great Lakes (North America) region, distinguished by graduates who lead and serve in their communities.

UDM is committed to quality education, service of faith, promotion of justice and compassionate service to persons in need. Accordingly, the university and its students, staff and administration take an active role in strengthening Detroit, through community outreach and partnership with like-minded organizations.

[edit] Colleges and campuses

UDM is comprised of seven colleges and schools: the School of Architecture, College of Business Administration, School of Dentistry, College of Engineering and Science, College of Health Professions/McAuley School of Nursing, School of Law, and College of Liberal Arts and Education.

The University has three campuses. The McNichols Campus is located on the southeast corner of McNichols and Livernois at 4001 West McNichols. The majority of the University's undergradutae and graduate programs are offered on this campus. It is also the primary location for UDM athletics as well as the six student residence halls.

The Riverfront Campus is home to UDM's School of Law in downtown Detroit at 651 East Jefferson across from the Renaissance Center.

The Outer Drive Campus, which is located at 8200 West Outer Drive, is the current site of UDM's School of Dentistry. The dental school and clinic are scheduled to move to a new site by January 2008.

[edit] Athletics

UDM sports teams are nicknamed the Titans and the school competes in the Horizon League, where it is perennially a contender for the Horizon League title in men's basketball. Men's Coach Perry Watson is a respected figure in Detroit basketball and he has developed strong recruiting ties with players from Detroit Public Schools. The University is the host institution for the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional and 2009 NCAA Final Four men's basketball tournament at Ford Field in Detroit.

Since 1996-97, UDM has won 14 league championships and 15 teams have competed in NCAA championships. The men's soccer team was the 2005 Horizon League champions.
