The University of Calicut is an affiliating university located in Thenjipalam, Kerala, India. It is one of the major centers of higher studies in north Kerala. It has more than twenty-five departments of study and research at its main campus and regional centres in Vadakara and Trichur. The university was founded in 1968.

As many as 262 colleges are affiliated to the University. Of these, 70 are located in Kozhikode district, 68 in Thrissur, 70 in Malappuram, 43 in Palakkad and 11 in Wayanad district.
The breakup in terms fo the subjects of study is: 115 Arts and Science Colleges, 53 Training Colleges, 23 Engineering/Technical Colleges( one of which is placed on its campus grounds ), 5 Medical Colleges, 4 Ayurveda Colleges, 2 Law Colleges, 23 Oriental Title Colleges, 7 I. H. R. D. centres, 1 Fine Arts College, 16 Nursing colleges, 2 Dental Colleges, 8 Pharmacy colleges, 1Homoeopathy college and 2 colleges for Hotel Management. As many as 88 colleges, offer both graduate and post graduate courses in various subjects.
Over 150 of these colleges are owned by private organisations or induviduals and most of them are aided by the state government. The remaining are run by the State Government. These 250 colleges have an annual sanctioned intake-capacity of nearly 60,000.
