From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is the fifth largest university in Arkansas, with a fall 2004 credit enrollment of 6,631. The university has a $51 million budget, and is one of the largest suppliers of allied health care workers and technical workforce in the state.

Though its legal name since joining the University of Arkansas System in 2002 is University of Arkansas at Fort Smith [1] , the university's officially preferred style is University of Arkansas - Fort Smith on first reference and UA Fort Smith on second reference. [2]

Established as Fort Smith Junior College in 1928, it later changed its name to Westark Community College (February 1972), then Westark College (February 1998), and finally UA Fort Smith (January 2002).

Recently, according to the Southwest Times, Arkansas State Senator David Bisbee has questioned the legality of the university and directed a state Department of Higher Education review of the transfer from a junior college to a four year university.
