The University School of Milwaukee (USM) is a small, private pre-kindergarten through secondary preparatory school located on 123 acres in River Hills and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is considered the best and most academically rigorous school in Wisconsin, and among the best in the Midwest alongside top schools from the Twin Cities, Chicago and Detroit.
The school was founded in 1851 as the German-English Academy by a group of Milwaukee Germans that included Peter Engelmann and William Frankfurth. The Academy offered classes that taught German language and literature as well as English. In 1891, the academy moved to the German-English Academy Building in downtown Milwaukee. This institution changed its name in 1917 to Milwaukee University School, due to anti-German sentiment as a result of World War I.
In 1963, the Milwaukee University School, Milwaukee Country Day School and the Milwaukee-Downer Seminary merged to become the University School of Milwaukee.[1]

There are 15 grade levels at USM with a grand total of 1,046 students:

University School of Milwaukee is home to a number of competitive athletic teams, especially for a school of its size. All teams must follow the school's no-cut athletic policy, which allows every student to participate in any sport he or she would like. The athletic program begins in fifth grade, when students become eligible for a number of teams, including basketball, track & field, and several intramural sports. Beginning in seventh grade, soccer, football, and field hockey are offered as fall term sports, as is baseball in the spring. Despite the broad participation in middle school sports, most of University School of Milwaukee's athletic attention is focused on the high school, which is home to 17 varsity teams. At some point in their high school career, 90% of USM students will participate in the athletic program.

A large portion of University School's acreage is used by the various athletic fields on campus, thus the various athletic teams at the school are not required to compete for practice time, allowing all teams to get the time needed for proper training.

The new science wing has been unveiled, and is currently being used by students. It was built through donations to the "Our Next Generation" campaign. It is a giant leap forward for the USM science program. The second phase of the project is set to start soon.
