Universal greeting

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The universal greeting is a short phrase used by Kup and Hot Rod in Transformers: The Movie to greet alien transforming robots. The origin of the universal greeting is unknown.

[edit] Usage

The universal greeting is first used by Autobot Kup when he and Hot Rod are approached by transforming robots on the planet of Quintessa. Although this is intended to dissuade hostile intent, the robots capture Kup and Hot Rod and bring them to their Quintesson masters where they are tried in a show trial on unspecified charges.

Despite this lack of success in its first usage, Hot Rod uses the greeting again and is able to defuse a conflict between the Autobots and Junkions already in progress when he and Kup arrive on the planet of Junk. The Junkions led by Wreck-Gar then become an important ally to the Autobots in the battle with Unicron and later against the Decepticons.

It's worth noting, however, that nobody in the movie other than Kup seems to recognize the greeting, which is essentially a running gag. The Quintesson guards continue chanting the phrase long after they've captured Hot Rod and Kup, whereas the Junkions chant the phrase long after friendship has been established, because it amuses them. The Junkions appear to be aping the phrase, as they do with the things they learn from television.

[edit] Spelling

The spelling of the Universal Greeting, as used in the original script of the film, and in Marvel Comics' adaptation of the movie, is:

  • bah weep graaagnah wheep ni ni bong

However, mis-spellings are notorious among fans. Some of the varied spellings used include:

  • bah weep granah weep ninni bong
  • ba weep granna weep ninny bang
  • bah weep gra na weep ni ni bahn
  • bah weep grah nah weep ni ni bong
  • bah weep grah nah weep ninibong
  • brah gweep bra na wheep ni ni bong

[edit] Other

The phrase is used in the PC game Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. When clicking numerous times on the hero Illidan, he responds with "Bah weep graaagnah wheep ni ni bong! It's the universal greeting."
