United States motor vehicle deaths

US Motor Vehicle Deaths—42,636 people died in motor vehicle accidents on the roadways of the United States in 2004, about 117 per day, or one person every 12 minutes. The total number of deaths dropped slightly from 2003. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), estimates that 15,434 lives were saved by the use of safety belts in 2004.
A study of 12 states by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showed higher speed limits resulted in an increase in traffic fatalities of about 500 over a nine-month period in 1995 and 1996.
