United States Maritime Service
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The United States Maritime Service was established in 1938 under the provisions of the Merchant Marine Act of 1936. The mission of the organization was to train officers and other men to become merchant marines. The Service has since been dissolved and/or absorbed into other federal departments, but persists as an auxiliary (e.g., consider the appointment of United States Merchant Marine Academy superintendent Joseph D. Stewart as a Vice Admiral in the USMS).
