United States House elections, 1938

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The U.S. House election, 1938 was an election for the United States House of Representatives in 1938 which occurred in the middle of President Franklin Roosevelt's second term. Roosevelt's Democratic Party lost a net of 72 seats to the Republican Party, who also picked up seats from minor parties. Nonetheless, the Democrats retained a commanding majority.

Possible factors contributing to the Republican gains included popular resistance to Roosevelt's "Court-packing" plan, and an economic downturn which weakened public confidence in the administration's New Deal policies. However, since the Republicans had suffered massive losses in the four previous House elections, their strong showing could also be regarded as the political equivalent of a dead cat bounce.
