United States House Committee on Financial Services

The United States House Committee on Financial Services (or House Banking Committee) oversees the entire financial services industry, including the securities, insurance, banking, and housing industries. The Committee also oversees the work of the Federal Reserve, the United States Department of the Treasury, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and other financial services regulators. It is chaired by Rep. Michael G. Oxley (R-OH) and the ranking Democrat is Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA). Following the Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives in the 2006 midterm elections, it looks likely that Frank will assume the chairmanship in the 110th Congress.

The subcommittee watches over the U.S. capital markets, securities and insurance industries and government-sponsored enterprises, such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It oversees the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as the self-regulatory organizations that police the securities markets.
