United Middle Belt Congress (UMBC) was a political party in Nigeria in the First Republic. The Party was funded by Joseph Sarwuan (J.S.) Tarka, by bringing together various smaller middle belt parties and progressive associations. The UMBC was a party created to allow the various ethnic groups in central Nigeria (present day Benue State, Nasarawa State, Plateau State, Kaduna State, Taraba State, etc.) the chance to represent their interests in the Northern Nigeria Assembly that was dominated by The Northern People's Congress. The UMBC was the largest opposition party in the Northern Nigeria Assembly. The UMBC ended into an alliance with the Southwest Nigeria dominant Action Group of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Some of the early leaders of the UMBC besides J.S. Tarka were: Edward Kundu Swem, Ahmadu Angara, Isaac Shaahu (Northern Assembly Opposition Leader), Solomon D. Lar, D. Bulus Biliyong, D.D. Dimka, V.T. Shisha, M.D. Iyorka, and Ugba Uyeh.
