- In the main United refers to one of two professional football teams in England: Manchester United and Sheffield United. Both these teams have city rivals in Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday. Thus cannot be referred to by their city name without confusion. The other "United" teams of England are referred to mainly by their city or district name as they don't have local rivals that share their name e.g. Leeds, Leeds United, Newcastle, Newcastle United, West Ham, West Ham United.
