Union organiser

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A union organiser is an employee or elected official of a trade union. In some unions such as the AMIEU and CFMEU in Australia, all organisers are elected by the membership of the union. A majority of unions, however, employ organisers as opposed to having paid elected officials.

The primary role of an organiser varies between unions and countries. In some unions the organiser's role is largely visiting members on job sites and helping to organise workers under the organising model. For conservative unions the organiser's role is largely that of servicing members and ensuring members do not step out of line with management.

Organisers in Australia may also take on industrial/legal roles such as making representations before Industrial Relations Commissions, tribunals and courts.
