Nepal before Unification: What is Nepal today was an assimilation of small states before unification. There were 22 and 24 states respectively in the far-western and western region of present Nepal. Kathmandu valley was divided into three states. To the South of Kathmandu was the strong state of Makwanpur. There were 3 powerful states in the east. Each state had a king and there were frequent quarrels among these small states. Kathmandu was by far the strongest state. It was the economic center of Nepal. Trade routes to Tibet and India ran through Kathmandu. Tibet was a strong state itself. Gorkha, the home state of Prithvi Narayan Shah, was not a very strong state. It had population of twelve thousand and it had a traditional rivalary with Thanahun, another of the 24 states in Western Nepal.
