Unidentified submerged object

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Unidentified Submerged Object, or USO, is defined as any object or optical or mechanical detection phenomenon of unknown origin observed within water that remains unidentified even after thorough investigation. The maritime analog to a UFO, or unidentified flying object, unidentified submerged objects are often seen by those who study unidentified flying objects as a phenomenon the same as or similar, but encountered in water instead of atmosphere. Likewise, many sightings of USOs constituting "typical" UFOs emerging from the water are seen as a subset of the latter rather than the former. Although identifying and dispelling unidentified flying objects has typically been important to militaries as a national security issue, the comparatively rare USO sightings have never been reported as a national threat or caused the sensation that typical UFO sightings often have.

[edit] USOs and Ice

Unidentified submerged objects are occasionally reputed to have the flown into and out of bodies of water that are choked with heavy ice coverings as if the ice presents no barrier whatsoever [1]. After these reports, large holes have been observed that do not appear marked by catastrophic impact, an ability to melt ice at speed of transit has been proposed. Examples of this have occurred in places like Scandinavia[2] when these objects have been reported flying in and out of the frozen lakes in the area.

[edit] USOs and Theories of Origin and Purpose

USOs that remain underwater are sometimes thought to have been tricks of the light caused by refraction and turbulent flow, or large water creatures.

Because of this close relation to water, unidentified submarine objects have occasionally been suggested to be controlled by the theoretical aquatic people of Atlantis. Most theories connecting the supposed beings to U.S.O. phenomena explain the people of Atlantis, or “Atlanteans”, as being a technologically superior civilization perhaps something other than “human,” co-existing but unbeknownst to the Homo sapiens sapiens subspecies.

[edit] 1967: U.S.O. Sighting

Main article: Shag Harbor

In 1967, a U.F.O. was reported crashing into Shag Harbor, Nova Scotia. The craft was reported to be about sixty feet long. It was reported to have been hovering and flashing orange lights, then it tilted at about a 45-degree angle and entered the water. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police was notified about the incident. A yellow light was reported in the water moving and leaving a trail of yellow foam. The Canadian Coast Guard was sent to the area of the crash. By the time they got to the spot of entry, with some other ships, the only thing that was still visible was the yellow foam. They checked if it could have been a plane crash. However, all flights in the area were checked and all planes were accounted for, and divers had found nothing. The incident has been the subject of much speculation by conspiracy theorists. Like the Roswell incident, it has been speculated that the U.S. Navy got involved. Supposedly, U.S. divers trailed the object for several days. According to some, a second craft dove into the bay and accompanied the first one. Both craft then supposedly left the water and headed for outer space. Like most U.F.O. conspiracy theorists say: the U.S. government then refused to reveal anything about what they had found.

[edit] Other Reports

  • February 1957 in Golfo Nuevo (Argentina) in which an unidentified submarine was hunted by several Argentinian warships (included an aircarft carrier) and navy planes, but was not found.
  • In 1966, an Australian banana farmer witnessed a USO emerge from a nearby swamp- [3]
  • In 1967, a fleet of Brazilian sailors was followed by a submerged USO for several minutes- [4]
  • Since the late 1980's, there had been many sightings of USO's around the Lake District, UK. Most notably, a sighting in 1994 at Derwent Water of two USO's. It lasted almost five minutes and was observed by 22 people. The area now receives regular USO sightings (perhaps one a year), as well as numerous UFO sightings in the surrounding areas. The most recent UFO sighting was in January of this year (2006), and the most recent USO sighting in the December of 2004.
  • In Sweden in 1999, a supposed USO crashed into a lake, with spectators nearby- [5]
  • The area around Laguna Cartegena in Puerto Rico has been an alleged hotbed of USO activity.
