[edit] IOH copying
There seems to be a current collection of people who are cutting and pasting entire sections of text from the IOH website into Wikipedia articles. The text is typically a word for word copy with no changes. I see this a copyright infringement as Wikipeida is for original works, not simply mirroring material from another source. Adding an external link to IOH is fine, but blatantly copying entire pages of IOH text, then posting it as an article, is not acceptable per Wiki guidelines. This can lead to all kinds of difficulties, not the least of which is an article labeled as a copyright infringement and deleted. I encourage people to cease this "cut and paste" activity. -Husnock 06:01, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

- None of the material that I have posted comes from the Institute of Heraldry (TIOH) website, but from publications produced and distributed by the TIOH over the years. I also used a summary of information relating to TIOH from a webpage on Army heraldry that I developed for the Army Quartermaster Museum using information obtained from visits to the TIOH archives at Fort Belvior. I have properly referenced these publications and websites at the end of the article. All of this information is in the public domain and not subject to copyright. I'm sure there may be some redundency with the TIOH websire as it is difficult to express things like the TIOH mission without using their verbage. --Ehrentitle 11:24, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- This article is actual not in question (in fact its a pretty good article). The main concern is folks copying and pasting IOH definitions of medals into articles about the medals themselves. See the history of Southwest Asia Service Medal for such an example. -Husnock 13:45, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, I know it would be somewhat time consuming, but it might be useful to post your warning in the discussion on those specific medal pages. Army insignia may not be your area of expertise but I would also appreciate your feedback on the Distinctive unit insignia page that I updated a while back. I also plan of doing more work on the Shoulder patch which I believe should revert back to the official title Shoulder Sleeve Insignia --Ehrentitle 15:26, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
