      • Sounds good. Planning starts soon. — ERcheck (talk) @ 22:18, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] October 2006

Photo looks good and like the link to MARSOC as well. --Looper5920 23:12, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
  • Selected Biography: Alford L. McMichael, newly retired; first African-American SgtMaj of the Marine Corps; then 1st Senior Non-Commissioned Officer for Allied Command Operations for NATO.
  • Quote:

"My Marine service was a life-changing experience for me. A positive one that had I not had, I most likely would not be standing here today.... In that diverse company I learned to be responsible for others, I learned to depend on others, and to understand what being depended on by others really meant. I learned that there was more to the world than me, and my kind.... I learned there was joy and satisfaction to be had by looking past the mirror. By serving common interests rather than only those of self.... My three years of service connected me to the rest of the world, the world outside myself, and the connection has been permanent.

Jim Lehrer, former Marine, Harvard commencement speech, June 8, 2006 [1]
  • Did you know: Added Oct 1 DYK... See this month in USMC history for ideas... continuing updates.
  • In the news: ongoing updates
Few thoughts on the proposals: Picture.... Not a fan. While I know the context behind it, on pure face value it conveys a bit of "White Man's Burden". Right now with all that is going on it may not be the best portrait to put out there. Bio.... I don't think the article is up to par. Nothing on life after the Marine Corps and I would still rate it at "Start" for right now if given the chance. I think we should at least have a B-Class article in the bio. Quote...I am of the opinion that it is a bit reverential. I would not rule it out completely but I would vote against it right now. I know that I should not be critisizing without offering solutions but I am a bit short on time at the moment. I will throw some ideas out tomorrow or the next day and hopefully we can come to terms with something this week.--Looper5920 11:58, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
No problem. I'm not tied to any of the suggestions, only that we need to work on the monthly changes. How about USMC as the featured article — since it just made FA? — ERcheck (talk) 22:41, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Future consideration:

  • Bio: John J. McGinty, III, Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient; retired, gives time visiting deployed troops.
  • Quote: "I can never again see a United States Marine without experiencing a feeling of reverence." — General Johnson, U.S. Army.

[edit] November 2006 (Birthday month)

  • Selected Picture: (done) Image:Puller-Birthday.jpg — Chesty Puller cutting the Marine Corps birthday cake in 1950 in Korea
  • Selected Biography: John A. Lejeune
  • Quote (done)
    • "From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and is the long eras of tranquility at home, generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas, that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security." — John A. Lejeune, Marine Corps Birthday Message, Marine Corps Order No. 47, 1 November 1921

[edit] December 2006

I think this is good to go.--Looper5920 11:54, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Selected Picture: Need something grunt related this month
Ideas:
I'll have to go with the first one (Marines in Afghanistan). Grunt related but not a WWII article like the FA.--Looper5920 11:54, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Selected Biography: Would recommend a civilian who has gone on to do something but was a Marine.
Ideas:
  • James Wadsworth Symington — served 1945-1946; a 4-term U.S. Congressman from Missouri; was a USMC-stub — just completed a major expansion. — ERcheck (talk) 16:49, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Like the idea and like the article.--Looper5920 11:54, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Highlighting articles featured on the Portal

What do you think of a message on an article's talk page to show that it was featured on the Portal.

Please note:

  • I've removed the wikilink to the article name to prevent a self-referential link (as is done with the WPMILHIST WikiProject tags).
  • When putting the tag on articles, the <br> tag at the end may need to be removed/moved to prevent an odd line break - depends on the length of the article name.

Examples:

2nd Battalion 5th Marines was featured on the United States Marine Corps portal as the Selected article. (9 March - 16 March 2006)

John Ripley (USMC) was featured on the United States Marine Corps portal as the Selected biography.
(9 March - 16 March 2006).

For current articles:

Pedro del Valle is currently featured on the United States Marine Corps portal as the Selected biography.
(24 June 2006)
  • Looks good. Let's roll with it.--Looper5920 07:28, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Expansion of CMC articles

As I was reading the article on Louis H. Wilson, Jr., 26th CMC, I noticed that his contributions as Commandant are buried in the last paragraph of the section on his military career. I haven't gone over all of the CMC articles, but I guess that either there is nothing specifically mentioned about their accomplishments/changes during their CMC tenure. This is a significant oversight and should be part of an expansion effort on these articles. Something for the future, as there are many other non-stub articles to be created and stubs to be expanded. —ERcheck @ 16:00, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MCRDs

MCRD Parris Island - the picture in the infobox seems more appropriate for the body of the article. Something that is clearly Parris Island, such as either an patch [2], or the entrance (as in MCRD San Diego).

Joint posting - Photo should be something common to both - such as something iconic from training - perhaps a Moto run/PFT photo. — ERcheck (talk) @ 12:46, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Not to keen on the patch but how about the new pic I have switched out. I think all recruits can relate to this no matter what era.--Looper5920 12:50, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
    • I was not too keen on the patch either... it was a quick idea. The new picture is something that is much more iconic. (I'm trying to find a good photo of the MCRD San Diego footprints for the body of the article.) It would be nice to try to get more images into both articles, including the Crucible; and pinning the EGA. — ERcheck (talk) @ 12:54, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
      • Agreed that the articles (especially MCRD SD) need some sprucing up but the Feature does need to be switched out. I am dragging ass at the moment and am going to bed. I'll follow up in the morning.--Looper5920 12:57, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Next feature - MCRD

I quickly put something together for the feature article. Need a copy edit on the intro paragraph and then it can get posted. Take a look and chop away--Looper5920 12:00, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Cut out line on yellow footprints. Got a line for the new photo? Changed the read more. What do you think? — ERcheck (talk) @ 12:58, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Still think the paragraph needs a bit more meat. I just don't know what it is. Any ideas?
      • Something about instilling Marine Corps values? — ERcheck (talk) @

Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego are the two training depots in the Marine Corps where all enlisted recruits go for boot camp. The Marine Corps trains over 30,000 recruits at these depots each year

Sorry for my tardiness on this one. Real life and work intervened along with a big case of indecision. Right now I have two candidates. I like the work that Tony has done on 2nd Battalion 9th Marines and I also think Battle of Tarawa is pretty good. Let me know what you think. I wanted to keep it ground focused since the pick is of aviation.--Looper5920 00:15, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

  • There have been two battalions featured, so I think it is good to have a battle. Save up 2/9 until it gets it GA mark. Go for it. BTW. Note that I have put a place at the top of the page to list what will be featured. — ERcheck (talk) 00:24, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] In the queue

"Among the Americans who served on Iwo (Jima) Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue." — Chester W. Nimitz

"A ship without Marines is like a garment without buttons." — Admiral David D. Porter, USN, 1863.

[edit] Solid quotes

"Patriotism is not something you put on each morning like a clean shirt. Patriotism is not something you can buy at the super market. Patriotism is not something you can get in return for a monthly paycheck to a man in uniform. It is devotion to an ideal—a principle; a burning desire that the things that people think are best for their country and its people are protected from erosion—protected from any and everything which would tend to lessen in the mind of the individual the image he has of how things should be in his ideal country." — General David M. Shoup, USMC, Commandant of the Marine Corps, 4 July 1962. [4]

"The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years." — James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, 23 February 1945.

"On behalf of all Americans I want a message sent to every member of the corps, to every place where the words Semper Fidelis is a way of life. General, tell it to the Marines, whether in ceremonial white or leatherneck blue, whether in dress greens or combat camouflage, whether they serve in the air, on land, or at sea, tell them that their countrymen are grateful. Tell them that we stand behind them. Tell them that we're proud of our proudest." - President Ronald Reagan [5], Remarks at the Change-of-Command Ceremony for the Commandant of the Marine Corps, June 26, 1983. Robert Barrow to Paul Kelley.

[edit] Ideas

  • How about a "Marines in the News" feature box? Maybe not as a continuous feature, but an occasional appearance at the top of the portal when a good story comes up. —ERcheck @ 03:16, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
    • I like this idea. The natural feeder for this would be the [http://USMC website which always has articles on Marines and links to newspaper articles on Marines. Great example would be the most recent one about the LtCol who just became the 1st Marine to get over 5000 flight hours. What do you think??--Looper5920 00:04, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
      • Go for it. You have the technical know-how to build a new box. I suggest that it go at the top, possibly in the right column, above the "Did you know". —ERcheck @ 00:14, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Just started this new box. I am thinking that it should have no more than 3 bullets in it because anymore than that will require alot more attention and upkeep than any one box deserves. I think both internal and external links could be used and articles should show all sides of the spectrum assuming they are legitimate news. Any blogs from disgruntled Marines should not be featured however a note on the Iraq Veterans against the War would be legit if that makes sense. Any thoughts??--Looper5920 09:03, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
    • I agree that three is a good number, four at most. I think that only reliable, legitimate new sources should be used. With "developing" stories of a controversial nature, sometimes even mainstream media gets ahead of itself.... so, I think for those stories, it is best to wait until solid news develops. I agree .... no blogs — as reliable sources are a requirement. —ERcheck (talk) @ 03:44, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Did you know?

The History & Museum's site for "this month" gives a good list of historical DYKs.

Akin to the main page DYK, I suggest that new USMC articles, if possible, have a DYK Portal entry and if appropriate, nominate for mainpage.

      • I don't think the number of articles should be limited. If there is a lot of activity in creating articles, I think it is good to let the Portal reflect that. —ERcheck @ 03:44, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
