This category is for court decisions that define the relationship between the U.S. states and the United States federal government and the powers reserved to each under the United States Constitution. These cases will either determine whether state actions are preempted or prohibited by federal law (statute or constitutional), or whether federal statutes intrude upon an area reserved by the U.S. Constitution to the states.
