  • Tagline: Life offers you a thousand chances ... all you have to do is take one.

Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) is a 35-year-old San Francisco writer whose perfect life has just taken an unexpected detour. Her recent divorce has left her depressed and with terminal writer's block, and her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh), a lesbian who is expecting a child, is beginning to think she might never recover. Patti convinces Frances to take an Italian holiday on a gay tour. While stopping in a small town she sees a notice about villa for sale. The next day the tour bus passes the villa and she has the driver stop so she can explore the house. In a series of serendipitous events she becomes the owner of a lovely yet dilapidated villa in beautiful Tuscany, Italy. From this point her life begins anew with a variety of interesting characters and odd but gentle souls.

She assembles a crew of mostly Polish immigrants to repair the house. Over the next year, she welcomes her San Francisco friend Patti, due to the fact that her life partner had left her, after the 5 times the couple had tried to get pregnant. Eventually, she finds the fulfillment she was searching for in a wedding at the villa. The movie ends with the possibility of a new love in her life.
