Umnak
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Umnak is one of the Fox Islands of the Aleutian Islands. It is the third largest island in the Aleutians and is separated from Unalaska Island by Umnak Pass. Nikolski is the only remaining community on the island. Fort Glenn, a former major military facility on the Northwest shore of the island, played an instrumental role in the North Pacific Theater in World War II. The island is home to the world's second-largest volcanic caldera on Mt. Okmok. The island has a land area of 1,776.77 km² (686.01 sq mi), and had a population of 39 persons as of the 2000 census. Its only community, Nikolski, comprised the island's entire population.
