Umar (Arabic: )is an Arabic name, most commonly transliterated as "Umar". It is also sometimes transliterated as "Omar" or "Umro". The word is derived from the tri-consonant Arabic word for "life" and could possibly mean "living" or something similar and the name itself means firstborn, disciple or famous..

When the Arabic letter "waow" is added to the end of the Arabic name, the name changes to "Amr", like Amr ibn al-Aas. Although very close in writing in Arabic, they are two different names, though sometimes the one is tranliterated as the other, so Amr ibn al-Aas is sometimes transliterated as "Umar ibn al-Aas". In the same way, it is possible to find Umar ibn al-Khattab transliterated as "Amr ibn al-Khattab".

The most prominent person in Islamic history to be named Umar was Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Caliph of Islam. It is very rare to find a Shi'a Muslim named Umar, though it is a common name among Sunni Muslims.
