UltraSPARC IV+

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UltraSPARC IV+ is a microprocessor manufactured by Sun Microsystems. It is the fifth generation of the UltraSPARC microprocessor family. The UltraSPARC IV+ contains 295 million transistors. The UltraSPARC IV+ microprocessor features enhanced processor cores and an on-chip L2 cache. It is fabricated on a 90 nanometer manufacturing process. The initial speed of the UltraSPARC IV+ was 1.5 GHz. It has since been increased to 1.8 GHz.

The UltraSPARC IV+ was released in Sun servers in September 2005. Sun Fire V490, V890, E2900, E4900, E6900, E20K and E25K all use UltraSPARC IV+ processors. These systems range from four processor sockets to 72 processor sockets.

The UltraSPARC IV+ processor, and the servers powered by the processor, have been very successful for Sun Microsystems. In May of 2006, it was announced Sun had reclaimed UNIX Server Revenue Market leadership.
