Ultima Thule (Swedish band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not to be confused with Ultima Thule (Estonian band).

Ultima Thule is a Swedish rock band. Their style is based on what they call Vikingarock (viking rock), a way of bringing old Norse folk rhythms into rock, mixed with Oi, Street Punk and Teddy Boy influences. Some of their lyrics are versions of poems and traditional songs by Sven-Bertil Taube and Evert Taube, such as "Änglamark" They have also released a version Sweden's National Anthem, Du gamla, Du fria.

[edit] History

Their first vocalist (who left during the bands reunification in the 1990s), Bruno Hansen, was the leader of the Nyköping "action group" of the Nordic Reich Party[1] and some music critics classify the band as White Power music[citation needed].

Ultima Thule successfully entered the mainstream when they were signed up by Bert Karlsson, a record manager with links to the New Democracy party, in the political right in Sweden. The band also received money from Bevara Sverige Svenskt ("Keep Sweden Swedish") for their first EP.[2] They also had a distribution deal with the neo-Nazi record company Ragnarock led by Erik Blücher.[3]

The band also received money from Bevara Sverige Svenskt for their first EP[2] and it was also used as theme song for Sverigepartiet and was included on compilation albums with bands like Skrewdriver and Brutal Attack.[1]

Band members have been interviwed by magazines like Streetfight, Force of Hate, Welsh Leak and Nordland. The band members also have written articles for Ung Front, the magazine of Sweden Democrats's youth organisation.

Between 1983 and 1987 the band played on about 30 skinhead concerts. On 6th June 1987 they played together with Agent Bulldog, Vit Aggression and Dirlewanger at a white power concert in Södertälje.[1] 30 November 1991 they played at a white power concert with Vit Aggression and Division S[1].

In 1994 Ultima Thule opened a record store, CD-butiken, where they sold records by Heroes in the Snow, Svastika and Vit Aggression.[1] The band also started a fan club that got up to 900 members[citation needed]. Through the club they sold, records, posters and t-shirts, not only for their own band but also for the record companies Last Resort Records and Ragnarock Records.[1] Ultima Thule's recording studio in Nyköping was burnt to the ground by arsonists on 10th February 2000.

The band and their record company Ultima Thule records has made some serious reforms since then, cutting contacts with the record label Ragnarock and other white power labels and are giving new bands the oppertunity to record their music at UT records so thet they don't become involved in the neo-nazi connections.[citation needed]

[edit] Sales

Ultima Thule has sold 1 platinum and 3 gold albums[citation needed], and they where the first group ever in Sweden with three albums on the 20th-best hits at the same time[citation needed]. Their lyrics are generally about Sweden's past glories (and defeats), and are mostly in Swedish, with only a few songs in English.
