Ulster Young Unionist Council
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Young Unionists, formally known as the Ulster Young Unionist Council, have been in existence since 2004 and are the youth wing of the Ulster Unionist Party. A body of the same name has existed and been affiliated to the Ulster Unionist Council since 1949, however disbandments happened in 1976 and again in 2004 following a period of mass exodus by members opposed to the 1998 Belfast Agreement.
A new body has again emerged. Although it's second chairman Peter Bowles has left the party in protest over association with the PUP, the group has enjoyed a period of sustained growth since its emergance. The UYUC has recently been successful in setting up a branch at Queen's University, Belfast
The youth wing has produced many current senior faces in the party including The Lord Laird of Artigarvan, The Lord Rogan of Lower Iveagh, Sir Reg Empey MLA and David McNarry MLA.
Their website contains the first party political weblog in Northern Ireland.
