Ulster Popular Unionist Party
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ulster Popular Unionist Party was a unionist political party in Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1980 by James Kilfedder, Member of Parliament for North Down, who led the party until his death in 1995. A few local councillors were elected on the same label.
It is debatable whether it ever constituted a proper political party rather than just a movement for Kilfedder and his supporters. When Kilfedder died in 1995, the three councillors elected on his slate soon went their own ways, one to the Democratic Unionist Party, one to the newly formed UK Unionist Party, and the other forming a shortlived "Independent DUP" movement. No party member contested the North Down by-election.
