Ulf Samuelsson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ulf Samuelsson (Born March 26, 1964, in Fagersta,Västmanlands län, Sweden), is a Swedish-American retired professional ice hockey player. On June 5, 2006, he was named the assistant coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, replacing Rick Bowness.
He was known as one of NHL's most hated players, specialising in heavy body checks and agitating opponents, who largely considered him a pest. His playing style also prompted his English nickname 'Robocop' and 'Tuffe Uffe' in Sweden. His knee-on-knee hit against Cam Neely during the 1991 Stanley Cup playoffs nearly ended Neely's career. Labels of "dirty player" and "cheap-shot artist" stuck with Samuelsson for the remainder of his NHL career.
Another notable Samuelsson moment occurred when Samuelsson checked Sergei Krivokrasov into the boards near Janet Jones, the wife of Wayne Gretzky, causing the Plexiglas to pop out and knock Jones unconscious.
During the Nagano Olympics, he was ejected from the Swedish team when it was discovered that he had requested and received a US citizenship. His Swedish citizenship was revoked and he wasn't allowed to play. In 2001, when Sweden permitted double citizenships, Ulf got his Swedish passport back.
