Ulaangom

Ulaangom "Mongolian: Улаангом" (Red Sand) is the capital of Uvs Province "Увс Аймаг" in Mongolia. It is located at the southwest end of the Uvs Nuur Lake"Увс Нуур", and on the slopes of Harhiraa Mountains "Хархираа Уулс", close to Russian border.

The city has a population of 26,319 (2000 census). Ulaangom has two suburban area named Chandman "Чандман" and Uliasnyi Hev "Улиасний Хэв". City has monuments from the communist era, for example there is a monument of Yumjaa, Tsedenbal, who led the country for more than 40years, in front of the Provincial Government Building. Ulaangom is considered as one of the lowest point in the country, which lies about 939m above the sea level.
There are many educational and cultural organizations and institutions in the city. Although, the population of the city is onle little over 26,000, there is a branch of a university, and there is a vocational college and there are 5 secondary schools. In 2006, the Consulate of Tuva Republic of Russia was opened in Ulaangom, and Representative Office of Uvs Province was opened in Kyzyl the capital of Tuva.

Ulaangom is connected to the Russian border by Highway, and imports its electricity from the Russian Federation. There is one airport (ULO)in the city which has direct flights from or to Ulaanbaatar by the Aero Mongolia Airline company . There will be more airline companies flying to Ulaangom in the near future. There is no direct flights to any other cities or towns in the country from the city. The city is planning to relocate its airport in the future, in order to expand it. As Mongolia is building a trans - country The Millennium Highway, Ulaangom will be connected to it.

Ulaangom is one of the coldest places in Mongolia. Temperature can reach -45 Degree Celsius or 7 Degree Fahrenheit in the winter and +40 Degree Celsius or 104 Degree Fahrenheit or more in the summer.
