Ugley is a small village located just off the B1383 road (the former A11) in the non-metropolitan district of Uttlesford in Essex, England. It is about two and a half miles (4 km) north of Stansted Mountfitchet.
Ugley was first recorded in 1041 as Uggele. It appears in the Domesday Book as Ugghelea. The name probably means "woodland clearing of a man named Ugga."
Within Ugley there are several buildings of the 16th and 17th centuries. The church has a 13th-century nave and a Tudor brick tower.
One of Ugley's organisations, of long repute, is the Ugley Women's Institute. Its members became so annoyed with all the witticisms that they recently changed its name to "The Women's Institute (Ugley branch)."
