UCAL
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
UCAL was a Portuguese dairy products and milk production company, sold to Parlamat in the 90's. Today, remains as a brand for some lines of products within the Parmalat Portuguese production, namely a chocolate drink, butter and selected milk. It was a company that distribuited mainly for the Lisbon area market.
As a chocolate drink with milk, produced in Palmela, Portugal, UCAL was extremely popular in this country for some generations. In the 90's, as the brand was sold, Parmalat continued it's production in the original factory. For a brief period, the name was changed to a Parmalat based brand name, but when a teenage girl died from poisoning after drinking Parmalat milk (later it was found out the girl actually committed suicide with a poison), the Parmalat brand became widely unpopular in Portugal, and UCAL was given back its original name. The drink can be currently found anywhere in Portugal, though people mostly consume it in cafès, and don't usually buy it in the supermarkets to drink at home.
