From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
U.S. Route 70S is an alternate to U.S. Route 70 between west of Belle Meade and Sparta, Tennessee. It runs concurrent with US 70 for several blocks in downtown Nashville. The highway follows the Murfusboro Pike from Nashville to Murfessboro then heads due east to McMinnville then north to Cookesville were it merges with US 70.
[edit] Route Improvements
During the 1980's the section of the route between Belle Meade and Smyrna was upgraded from two to four lanes.
In 1991 the portion from Smyrna to Murfessboro was also upgraded to four lanes.
In the early 1990's the 18 mile strech from Murfessboro to Woodbury was widned from two to four lanes.
Between 1994 and 2002 the section between McMinnville and Cookesville was widened to four lanes and a four lane bypass around McMinnville was built.
As of 2006 the only section of US 70S that lacks four lanes is between Woodbury and McMinnville. There have been plans to upgrade this section from two to four lanes as well, but no formal commisioning has occured. Construction has begun outside McMinnville on widening to four lanes for three miles as a way to avoid congestion.
