U.S. Route 163 is a U.S. Highway, commissioned in 1971, that runs through Utah and Arizona. Its route number is a "violation" of the usual AASHTO numbering scheme, as it comes nowhere near its implied "parent", U.S. Route 63.
It runs for 64 miles (103 km), from 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Bluff, Utah at the junction of U.S. Route 191, to Kayenta, Arizona at the junction of U.S. Route 160. It cuts through the heart of Monument Valley, and travels through southern San Juan County, Utah and northern Navajo County, Arizona the southern 44 miles (70.8 km) of which runs across a part of the Navajo Nation. It passes through the small town of Mexican Hat, Utah and crosses the San Juan River on the south side of town.
Historical Note: Between 1934 and 1938, the original U.S. Route 163 was commissioned between Des Moines, Iowa and Oskaloosa, Iowa. This was a previous alignment of U.S. Route 63 before the latter was rerouted to go north. This road is now Iowa Highway 163.
