U-boat pen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
U-boat pens were large concrete bunkers erected along the German coast (Wilhelmshaven) and along France's Bay of Biscay by the German Third Reich during World War II. The pens were designed to protect German submarines (U-boats) from Allied air attacks, and were generally effective until the introduction of the Tallboy bomb which was able to penetrate the thick reinforced concrete indicative of German construction. German U-boat bases in France include: Brest, Lorient, St. Nazaire, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, and Toulon.
