[edit] History merge
Is there a reason why the history merge hasn't been performed yet? Is it because I screwed up the original placement of the article in my userspace? --Coredesat talk. ^_^ 05:15, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Never mind, Samir did it. I'll do things right next time. --Coredesat talk. ^_^ 09:19, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Pictures
Hey, there's a bunch of pics in the Russian (?) article. íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 23:40, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- I noticed, but does fair use allow us to use those? I don't see anything in there that does. --Coredesat talk. ^_^ 23:58, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- If any of its free, upload to commons making sure one of the cats is commons:category:tropical cyclone, I'll find its home.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:04, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- They're all fair use pictures, not free ones (well, the satellite picture is, but we have two of those already). I know that the fair use criteria allows us to use some low-res photos, but I'm not sure if that extends to press photos like those (I can do everything else, but I don't do a lot in the image department). --Coredesat talk. ^_^ 00:09, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- True, didn't really expect much else. I'm not hot on FU either, though I think I will get much better soon. Any free images will likely appear on zh.wiki if anywhere (self-made). Oh and when the NRL pic comes off the main page (and is unprotected) can someone please crop it? We don't need the text at the top-left and bottom, and its PD so we can.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:14, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] PAGASA
I noticed that the Philippines has contributed names to JTWC for naming tropical storms/typhoons in the Western Pacific. Why then would they feel the need to change it when it enters their "area of responsibility"? Since they agreed to contribute these names in the first place, they should at least go with the current name to avoid confusion. Anybody know why they do it this way?Jlujan69 05:17, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- They feel that their residents will pay more attention to the warning if it is a name they recognize. The PAGASA name is only used in the Philippines and is not used by any other countries in official weather reports, so no confusion should arise. --Holderca1 17:58, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Importance
Given the high death toll and damage from Saomai, I've set this at mid-importance. --Coredesat talk. ^_^ 19:24, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Internation response
I am glad to talk with you about this entry. The major idea i wrote the international response is to rose the righteousness of people. When the Hurricane Katrina took place, nearly all the countries offered to aid the Americans. Comparing with the more poor chinese, they received nothing, I didn't see any reports which give a mere little commiseration. It is so strange to see the far more happier americans receive much more attention and helps than the much poorer chinese who deserved more aids. Ksyrie 13:42, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- (cross posted from user's talk page) I understand your point of view, but your addition unfortunately violates more than one Wikipedia guideline. WP:NPOV, and WP:CITE, and WP:V, which means that it must be neutral, must be cited, and must be verifiable. It also violates style guidelines. If a proper source could be found, then maybe it warrants inclusion. Chacor 13:46, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- Comparing the two, they are not very similar, Katrina caused more than $80 billion USD, Saomai caused $1.5 billion USD, Katrina killed over 1,800, Saomai killed over 300. When earthquake/tsunami struck southeast Asia, many countries offered aid. --Holderca1 18:07, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- while, the number reach more than 400,in view of money, how can you compare it in dollars when a big mac only cost 1 dollar, and 3 dollars?Ksyrie 20:24, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't understand what you are trying to say. What does a Big Mac have to do with anything? --Holderca1 13:02, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think the vast difference in casualties has to do with better prediction of the storm, and better evacuation of the areas that were determined to be affected. Malamockq 20:27, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- even in the USA during the Katrina, more than 1000 people were deceased, how can you count on China a country far more poor than the USA to do better?Ksyrie 20:27, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- You are making a statement that is against your argument. If a Katrina like event hit China, the death toll would likely be in the tens of thousands due to lower building strength and more densly populated. --Holderca1 13:02, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

For reference here are 3 IFRC sources on recovery efforts (including international) [1], [2] and [3]. Seeing as I'm going on wikibreak soon I'm not going to work this into the article, can someone else?--Nilfanion (talk) 21:35, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Additional comments :
- Why is the damage in terms of money seen in the box in USD, shouldn't it be in Philippine peso or in Yuan.
- Adding the different acronyms beside the long name would be help the reader e. g. Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
- Condition of Readiness is brought up in the Preparations section without prior mentions or without explanation/wikilinking.
