Tyne Metropolitan College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tyne Metropolitan College is a large college of further education in North Tyneside. It was formed on March 1, 2005 by the merger of North Tyneside College and Tynemouth College, which had different histories; Tynemouth College was a sixth form college, based at Hawkeys Lane, serving the former county borough of Tynemouth where secondary schools only go up to 16, while North Tyneside College was a college of further education on the Coast Road (A1058) in Wallsend. The new amalgamated college was officially opened by Prime Minister Tony Blair in September 2005.

The college has centres for Business and Technology, Creative and Leisure Studies, Professional Care and Education and Cultures & Sciences. The Sixth Form Academy has over 40 A-levels to choose from, the widest choice in the area.

From September 2006, Tyne Metropolitan College will be offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the first further education establishment in North Tyneside to do so, making it one of the only IB World Schools in the region.
