Tychy (pronounce: Image:Ltspkr.png ['tixi], German: Tichau) is a city in southern Poland with a population of 132,600. Situated in the Silesian Voivodeship (since 1999), previously in Katowice Voivodeship (1975-1998). Tychy is an important center of beer production (Tyskie beer) and automotive industry.

Tychy is located about 20 km south of Katowice in the Upper Silesian Industrial Area near the Vistula river. The city borders with Katowice in the north, Mikołów in the west, Bieruń Stary in the east and Kobiór in the south.

First information about Tychy comes from 1467.

[edit] Origins of New Tychy

The "New City" was designated by Prezydium Rządu in 1950 and deliberately located near to Katowice with the intention that it wouldn't be self sustaining city. Tychy is the largest of the so-called "new towns" in Poland and was built from 1950 to 1985 to allow for urban expansion in the southeast of GOP. New Tychy were development to be 100,000 people town. In 2006 the population had reached 132,500.

Design and planning of New Tychy was delegated to Kazimierz Wejchert and his wife Hanna Adamczewska-Wejchert.
