Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI) is the oldest television station in Indonesia, and was the only television station until 1989. The television station is publicly owned, the first broadcast was made on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of Indonesian Independence on 17th August 1962 from the National Palace, Jakarta. This was a black and white transmission, and the station subsequently broadcast the Asian Games held in Jakarta.

Its headquarter is located in South Jakarta. Apart from the central studio, TVRI also has several regional branches:

  1. TVRI NAD
  2. TVRI North Sumatra
  3. TVRI Yogyakarta
  4. TVRI East Java
  5. TVRI Bali
  6. TVRI South Sulawesi
  7. TVRI Papua

TVRI lost its national monopoly in 1989 with the establishment of the private television station RCTI and later TPI.

The initial motto of TVRI was "Weaving Unity and Togetherness" ("Menjalin Persatuan dan Kesatuan"), but in 2000, the motto was changed to become "Closer to the Heart" ("Makin Dekat di Hati").
