I believe the attempts to protect people from the consequences of failure goes against the law that the fittest shall survive and is thus a trend to be opposed as much as possible. I think we also as humanity must become aware that we are creating intelligent computers and designing them not to trust us. My fear is that in their attempt to solve our problems the computers will create a dystopia from which there is no escape.
[edit] Western attittudes to the Third World
The Western attittude to the Third World is spun in a web of alleged good intentions but I think these good intentions are creating a highly unpleasant atmosphere of dependency in the Third World nations. The West likes to use the charitable model of bringing Westerners in to help solve the problems of the Third World rather than bringing investment to the Third World in the way that China does. China has been criticised for ignoring the problems of human rights and corruption in Africa while it pushes to invest in the country, building infrastructure and investing money. Of course any businessman going into a Third World country is going to try to get on with the local authorities, but the ethical Western left believe they are above that. They prefer Charity and Aid development. The latter involves shackling Third World countries with debt to help them with non-profitable but ethical works that allegedly will help the poorest members of the society. When charity fails, as inevitably it must, local corruption is blamed but never the charitable model itself.
The only way to end the inequalities betweent the first and third worlds is wage equality. As long as a cleaner in one country earns 15 or 20 times more per hour than a similar worker in another country there will be a first and a third world and the only way to address the problem of poverty in the third world is to get wages up to a level where they equal wages in the first world. This can only be done through supply and demand. While immigration from the poor to the rich world relieves a little of the tension the real solution is to develop the third world economically. Thus if the first world wants to help the third world they need to do so by investing their money. Not like Gates and Buffet, who are threatening to invest their vast fortunes into charitable projects for the world. I seriously believe these people are misguided and ignorant.
I am concerned that the US think Cuba belongs to them and there will be a war between Latin America and the US once the US influence in the rest of the world diminishes. I support the integration of Latin America and believe the region needs to develop a new doctrine of no interference in Latin America as the Monroe Doctrine proclaimed US dominanace in the region after the break-up of the Spanish empire.
